Metal industry – the economic
backbone of the region
The metals industry is one of the sectors offering the largest number of jobs in Lusatia. The sector includes numerous traditional companies which enrich the region with their driving force and expertise. Lusatia is thus home to market leaders in the areas of metal processing, mechanical and plant engineering as well as laser and automation technology.
Traditional sites with cutting-edge facilities
Traditional sites and innovative companies such as Ortrander Eisenhütte, Kjellberg and voestalpine in Finsterwalde, Tenova TAKRAF in Lauchhammer, ALTRAD plettac in Großräschen and Stahlbau Ruhland offer a high level of expertise in metal processing and machining, laser technology and steel construction and mechanical engineering. Thus ALTRAD plettac scaffolds are visible on construction sites all over the world.
Companies from automation technology, factory systems and lightweight construction sectors can also be found here, where they can profit ultra-modern from an active research landscape. ATN Hölzel supplies state-of-the-art systems for joining technology, COVAC Elektro und Automation works with automation technology and MBN installs complete production plants, while Trumpf in Neukirch supplies ultra-modern processing systems for the metalworking industry.
Innovation and research
Structural changes are giving existing suppliers to the energy industry an opportunity to reposition themselves, which the companies are making optimum use of due to their flexibility and innovative strength. Excellent research and science institutions – such as the wide range of disciplines relevant to the industries at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, the Panta Rhei gGmbH Research Centre for Lightweight Construction Materials, the Brandenburg Innovation Centre for Modern Industry, the Centre of Competence for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses 4.0 in Cottbus and the Senftenberg Efficient Factory Centre – create excellent conditions for this in collaboration with leading networks.
Together in the innovation and research association, work is being done in Lusatia on new energy systems and concepts for sustainability at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The mobility of tomorrow benefits from the work of the Zittau branch of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology, which produces advanced lightweight construction materials and concepts.
Clusters and networks
Lusatia’s long-established companies specialising in metal processing, mechanical and plant engineering are, among other things, actively engaged in the Cluster Metal Brandenburg and the Mechanical Engineering Network Saxony (VEMASinnovativ).
