An exceptional habitat
From the Upper Lusatian highlands in the south across the Lausitzer Gefilde fields to the heath and pond areas in the north, the Bautzen district is home to unique flora and fauna. Even in the place where only recently the bucket excavators were still working at the Brandenburg border, a new holiday region is being created:
The Lusatian Lake District – a paradise for water lovers
The numerous lakes in the Saxony and Brandenburg section of the Lusatian Lake District are sure to attract many tourists. Surfers, divers or anglers, sailors or motor sport enthusiasts – everyone can find a stretch of water to suit him or her perfectly. Even today lakes around Hoyerswerda invite you for natural recreation.
The Upper Lusatian highlands, the district’s largest conservation area, impresses visitors with pleasant combination of woods, rural cultural landscape and picturesque villages. Hikers can find worthwhile trails and destinations at any time of the year.
Large sections of the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape are part of the UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve. Since time immemorial fishermen have reared a splendid type of edible fish in Germany’s largest cohesive pond area, the Lusatian carp. The well-developed cycle paths enable you to experience this paradise literally.
A small ethnic group with a large sense of pride
The place-name signs reveal something special about the Bautzen district: it is home to two languages. Some 60,000 Sorbs still live in Germany – 40,000 spread between Kamenz, Bautzen, Hoyerswerda and Weißwasser. They enrich life in the region with their culture, making it totally unique.
The tradition is impressive. On Easter Sunday men dressed in top hats and tails ride through the countryside singing. Atop decorated horses they bring the joyful news of the resurrection of Christ from place to place.
The wedding of the birds is particularly popular with children. To give thanks for the food they were given over winter, the birds place sweet pastries shaped like nests or birds on the plates left out for them.
The most well-known legendary figure is the sorcerer Krabat who used his powers to perform many a good deed. The Krabat mill in Schwarzkollm is one of the places where the stories seem to come to life. There you can see Krabat and the black miller to this day.
Traditional, dynamic, innovative: the mix makes all the difference
The Bautzen district (Upper Sorbian: Wokrjes Budyšin) in eastern Saxony roughly covers 2,400 km², making it the largest district in the Free State of Saxony – with Bautzen, Bischofswerda, Kamenz, Hoyerswerda and Radeberg as major towns. In 2018 the district had a population of 300,880. It borders Brandenburg to the north, the Görlitz district to the east and the Czech Republic and the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district to the south. Its western neighbours are the state capital Dresden and the Meißen district. The district is part of the Neisse Euroregion. In the 2019 Prognos Zukunftsatlas district ranking, the Bautzen district took 294th place out of 402 districts in Germany and is therefore classed as a region with “balanced opportunities and risks”. The gross domestic product (GDP) was 7,887 billion euros in 2017 and experienced the second highest increase in the state compared the previous year (4.1 %).
The district has a very well-developed transport infrastructure. This includes the A4 national motorway, the junction to the A13 in the western part of the district, several A-roads, civil airports and rail links.
Sector diversity and strong locations
The economy of the Bautzen district is characterised by its diverse range of sectors. Companies have been set up in machine construction, railway vehicle manufacture, the textile industry, information technology, the food and beverage industry and biotechnology. In a balanced mixture, innovative high-tech companies, powerful production sites and a strong skilled trades sector complement each other in a modern economic structure with growth potential.
The regional companies cooperate in sector-oriented networks and support each other mutually in procurement, service, research and development, in training matters and in marketing. So they achieve much more than just reduce costs. As a result there are success stories in almost all commercial areas.
Global players and innovative technologies
Alstom Transport Deutschland GmbH delivers trams from Bautzen to the whole world. Leppersdorf is home to Europe’s most technologically advanced dairy – Sachsenmilch AG. Deutsche Accumotive GmbH, based in Kamenz, is just one example of innovative technology with its production of advanced battery cells. In addition to machine construction, metalworking and the food sector, the industrial landscape is characterised by plastics technology, plant construction and surface engineering. Business do not only confirm that the district has good infrastructure but also constantly confirm that working with local authorities runs very smoothly.
2018 the signal was given for broadband expansion in the Bautzen district. During the project period roughly 60,000 households and 8,800 commercial enterprises without adequate resources in the district will be equipped with powerful fibre-optic connections. Schools and training and research facilities will also be given fibre-optic connections.
Top launch conditions for start-ups
Inexpensive commercial spaces can be rented at the Bautzen technology and start-up centre, the Lusatia technology centre in Hoyerswerda and the Rossendorf technology centre.
You can benefit from joint trade fair presentations, interesting technology transfer projects and collaboration with the Bautzen state academy and the higher education institutions in the neighbourhood.
Well-developed commercial spaces and fast-track broadband expansion also form a good foundation for developing new ideas and helping them to grow.
High quality of life
The word has spread:
this area is not only a good address for business – above all it offers a high quality of life.
Year after year more and more people are fascinated by its rural charm and cultural treasures.
Plenty of leisure facilities, well-developed cycle paths and hiking trails, an increasing number of water sports resources – the Upper Lusatia holiday region takes second place out of all of Saxony’s destinations.
Top conditions for a sector with potential.
